Uncanny X-Men #1(2024) – 9.0

Exactly what I am looking for in a “from the ashes” first issue. Characters I know and love, with a LOT of questions left unanswered. This will be on my pull list for SURE!

I absolutely LOVE the art in this book. Not only do we get to see some of my personal favorite characters, but we get to see them in several different locations in and out of their X costumes.

Caution tape with "Warning! Spoilers below!" warning the reader that if they continue to read they may encounter spoilers.

If you haven’t READ the book yet, and you plan to, please don’t read these pages because they are MAJOR spoilers, but I wanted to showcase David Marquez’s art and Gail Simone’s story telling. I haven’t been brought to tears except by a couple books so far in my comic reading journey. This was definitely one of those moments!

Story

In Uncanny X-Men #1 we first find Rogue, Wolverine, and Gambit in a faraway place sending an Old God into hibernation for at least the next year. There are some interesting tie-ins here to the Avengers and Dr. Strange and The Eye of Agamotto. I’ll leave the details in the book, but I really liked this little tie-in.

After sending the Old God to hibernate in Antarctica the trio rendezvous with another old favorite, Nightcrawler, where they are to see a sick child in the cancer ward of a hospital. Who knew the X-Men would be reduced to ‘Make-A-Wish’ sponsors? But that’s where it actually gets really interesting. I will refrain from including ALL of the spoilers in writing, but this was an incredibly heartfelt moment that brought me to tears.

With emotions overwhelming, and feeling as if she doesn’t understand her place in the world, Rogue asks Gambit for some quiet and seclusion so she can reflect. I love what Gail does throughout this book with her ‘inner rogue voice’ as the narrator pointing out the complexities of the Rogue/Gambit relationship. I am excited to see what she comes up with next, and what’s in store for the ‘new mutants’ that showed up on the very last page.
