I started reading Grommets based on a recommendation from my LCS owner. I don’t know what a ‘grommet’ is, I was never part of ‘skater culture’ but I still relate with so many of the things that happen in this book.
The amount nostalgia on every page is mind-blowing. From the ‘Judas Priest’ shirt to the ‘Rush – Moving Pictures’ cassette tape. And I can nearly SMELL the truck that they rode to the skate park in. Gasoline and cigarettes mixed with grandpa’s farts.

Art
The art in grommets is SO good. The artist really stepped into a time machine to bring us all of the 1980’s nostalgia. The video arcade, the t-shirts, and the vehicles are all So familiar to those of us that grew up in the 80’s and 90’s.
Beyond the context of the art, the style is also outstanding! The lines are clean, the action is exciting and dynamic, and the character facial expressions LITERALLY speak for themselves.
Story
Grommets is written from the point of view as if Brian [Posehn] and Rick [Remender] had met when they were young adults and attended the same school. This is basically a mashup of their personal stories, and I’m so glad they decided to share it with the world because it is such a wonderful trip down nostalgia lane.
The first book focuses on Rick’s first day at Altamira Junior High School. He quickly finds a friend in Brian, the self proclaimed ‘King of Sacramento’ who bums a ride from his Grandpa to the skate park.
We learn that Brian isn’t as great of a skater as he makes himself out to be… and more in issues to come!
